Flora and Fauna

Marlborough is home to a wide variety of rare and endangered plant and animal species, many unique to the region, along with more common indigenous species and a number of introduced organisms . Due to the geographical diversity of the region, significant habitats include everything from salt marshes to alpine meadows, to temperate forests.

Conservation efforts including predator free islands in the Marlborough Sounds, along with numerous forest parks and reserves help preserve Marlborough's biological diversity.

In spite of the best conservation efforts, some species have become extinct, and conservation is an ongoing challenge.
