Named after Marlborough's first woman mayor Liz (Elizabeth) Davidson, Liz Davidson Place is a 'pocket park' redevelopment of a former car park and toilet block in central Blenheim on the corner of Queen and Charles Streets.
The Marlborough District Council floated plans to redevelop the area as a pocket park in 2011, however the idea generated controversy particularly amongst local retailers. Public consultation over the redevelopment of the existing car park was held in late 2011, and a number of local businesses expressed concern at losing the car park space.
In the end a compromise was reached which retained 25 parking spaces of the original 43 but resulted in a new toilet block and a paved area with seating and a raised grassed area.
The contract for redevelopment was awarded to Fulton Hogan by tender, with a tender value of $477,332 and work began on the redevelopment in spring of 2012.
The park was formally opened on 20 December 2012 with local dignitaries in attendence.
