Hounds Tongue / Kowhaowhao is a common epiphytic fern native to New Zealand, found growing on a wide range of substrates. It is reasonably drought tolerant and prefers open habitats. It can colonise tree trunks, rocks, or areas of ground with its distinctive creeping rhyzome.
This example has colonised an artificial concrete structure in the form of the Burleigh Bridge over the Taylor River in Blenheim.
