th (January 1841) A strong SE wind prevents the Europeans from coming & me from visiting them - I preached to my congregation in the morning from the folly & miserable end of Dives & the happy end of Lazarus - very attentive. I held school after dinner then held short service in English for the benefit of my dear wife & a European neighbour. Evening again held service with the natives & preached from John 1. 1-3. A profitable day to my soul.

(January 1841) Prayer Meeting night. It would do the hearts of our English friends good to listen to the prayers of our English friends good to listen to the prayers of this people, simplicity & fervour are strongly marked -

(January 1841) Preached this evening to a very numerous congregation at my station from Luke 17.3. The subject was felt to be of great importance & was attended with Divine influence.

(January 1841) I left school this morning at 9am afterwards preached to my people from 1. Tim 1.15. I trusted perhaps too much to myself because of the familiarity of the subject, consequently was rather embarrassed - preached in the afternoon to about half a dozen Europeans from Heb. 2 . 1-4. Afterwards met the native class from TOTARA NUI. Then preached in the evening from Gal 6.7,8. A very happy day. I rejoice O Father because of the honour thou purest on me -

(January 1841) I came home yesterday from a visit to the sound. The Gospel is I trust taking hold of the people's hearts. I preached at WEKENUI a large settlement to upwards of 200 from 2 Cor. 5 . 18-21. I was much assisted in speaking. I spent the rest of the evening in trying to answer the numerous enquiries of the natives after spiritual truth & the meaning of God's word. Next day I went to TOTARANUI found a large number waiting my arrival - perhaps 300. I gathered them together & was greatly blessed whilst calling their attention to Rom.1.16. Met the class of more than 20 striving to be right in the way to heaven & spent the rest of the evening as before explaining as well as I could the various passages they bought forward. God is at work here.
