25 (December 1840) Christmas Day. Hail blessed day, which gave birth to our Emmanuel! My heart doth rejoice in God - This morning I directed the attention of the nations here to the Angels story and song, & the conduct of the shepherds. Afterwards. I assembled the Europeans together in Mr. Wynen's house, preached to them from 1 Tim 1,15. Afterwards baptized 4 infants of the Europeans - their fathers were drowned by the upsetting of a boat three months ago great attention was paid - I was pleased to see so many (25) attend. In the evening I again spoke to the natives from 1 John 5,4. It has been a happy day.

27 (December 1840) The first Sunday I have spent on shore here - In the morning I had a large number of natives this morning to whom I preached and found liberty - afterwards a good company of Europeans came together & I spoke to them of the nature & design of the redemption of the world by Christ. They listened with great attention. I afterwards married 2 European couples I then met the native class - In the evening I spoke again to the natives from 2 Tim .2. I felt fatigued, but very happy in my work.

31 (December 1840) We have this day removed to a native house at NGAKUTA the head of the Bay. We intend fixing here. It will be central to the CLOUDY BAY & QUEEN CHARLOTTE's sound. There are perhaps 1000 people within a very short distance. There's the bustle attendant on removing we have not been properly attentive to that spirit of self-examination & humiliation before God which this season especially calls forth. Oh give me grace to begin the New Year well!

3 (January 1841) Preached this morning to a very attentive congregation on the necessity of a present reception of the gospel - afterwards went down to the European settlements & held services at two of the places - they were obliged for my visit.

5 (January 1841) Met the members of the class & was pleased with their experiences. They are simple &. I hope good things from them - there are perhaps 14 of them.

7 (January 1841) Native school this evening. I have divided them into 3 classes. The first is comprised of those who are able to read the testament. The second of the males, the third of the females, not able to read.
