Cotula coronopifolia (Batchelor's Buttons)

Cotula coronopifolia (Batchelor's Buttons) is a low growing, mat forming, salt tolerant herbaceous plant with small bright yellow flowers in summer, native* to New Zealand found on beaches and salt marsh. C. coronopifolia is typically an annual or short lived perenial. Seeds are buoyant and are dispersed by water. The common name derives from the small round, button shaped flowers.
This is a small example observed at Marfells Beach growing on former intertidal land uplifted by the Kaikōura earthquake.
*Native indicates found naturally in New Zealand without deliberate or accidental introduction, however may also be found naturally elsewhere. Endemic is unique to New Zealand.
