Black swans (kakīānau), Cygnus atratus are a common waterfowl in Marlborough, found at the Taylor Dam, Wairau Lagoons, and other aquatic environments around the region. The Taylor Dam is one of the best locations to see the birds up close, where breeding pairs regularly produce cygnets.

The birds are considered native, although they were introduced into New Zealand from Australia, as they have the capability to self-introduce.

The example pictured was observed nesting at the Taylor Dam.
