History - The Beginning
IN THE BEGINNING
To mark the new century, the local writers' group
- 'Linkwater Soundings' -
started work on a collection of writings and photos portraying the lives
- both contemporary and historic -
of residents of the inner Sounds and Linkwater area.
Being known as an amateur photographer, I was asked for a photo or two.
Of course, not being satisfied with the range of the photos I already had,
I went all-out and nearly developed RSI clicking the shutter,
gathering enough local images worth saving on a CD.
..........I became a familiar, if somewhat suspect, sight on the roads...............
I concentrated on what had been my subjects of interest since I first got
really serious about photography about a year earlier.
My personal deadline was July 2002 and the CD contains an
assortment of photos taken up to that time.
There are trucks, diggers, boats with a helicopter or two.
To round out the picture I added signs, landmarks, landscapes and seascapes.
A DIY crash course in technology
taught me a few things about the workings of the newly-acquired computer.
I scanned at 100dpi, then burned onto the CD, about 1500 prints that
I hoped might be of interest to history buffs in 50 years time
[ assuming the CD can be read then !! ]
THE TIME CAPSULE
Over the months, the 'Linkwater Soundings' members
interviewed, wrote, collected, collated and edited,
until their new century project evolved from being a
'great millenium idea'
into a local history collection which was officially deposited
and locked in a beautiful carved box.
Made from kauri, fittings and workmanship donated by local residents,
it and it's contents are symbolic of the creativity and generosity of this area.
This masterpiece is in the care of the Marlborough District Council
and it's secrets will be revealed when it is unlocked in 2052.
what happens today .......is history in the making
