Marlborough is New Zealand's largest wine region, with the Wairau and Awatere valleys producing the region's internationally recognised sauvignon blanc. Although sauvignon blanc is Marlborough's signature variety, other wines including pinot noir, pinot gris, riesling, chardonnay, and gerwurztraminer are also produced in the region. Most of the wineries in the region are located on the Wairau Plain where many of them have restaurants and cellar doors where it's possible to visit and sample wines direct from the producer. There are also a handful of wineries in the Awatere region.
