Titirangi Hebe speciosa

Last Modified: 1-2-2020 8:06

This magnificent rare hebe is highly popular with gardeners but in the wild is only found in a few localities in the Marlborough Sounds and on the West Coast of the North Island. Growing to 2 metres high, it forms a rounded shrub with glossy dark green leaves and large magenta flower inflorescences in Summer. Stems and margins of young leaves are purple as are the backs of leaves. The remaining populations in the Sounds are found on exposed sea cliffs.
Titirangi will tolerate most soils but prefers to be well drained. It demands good light and will tolerate frost down to about -10ºC. It is easily propagated from seeds or cuttings.
