Kawakawa (Piper excelsum) is a New Zealand endemic shrub or small tree found particularly in coastal areas as an understorey plant. Kawakawa is valued by Māori for a range of herbal properties, with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties among others. Herbal use of kawakawa was also widely adopted by European settlers, and continues to be a highly regarded native plant for its herbal properties.
This example was observed at Monkey Bay, Rarangi.
