New Zealand has several native plant species in the violet family including the Mountain violet (Viola cunninghamii). Although the flowers are immediately recognisable as violets, this species is indigenous to New Zealand where it can be found on all the main islands and the Chatham Islands.

This example was photographed in an alpine environment on the Black Birch Range.
