Salicornia quinqueflora

Salicornia quinqueflora is a low growing succulent found in coastal regions, particularly salt marshes and estuarine environments around New Zealand. Although native to New Zealand, Salicornia is also found in Australia. In Marlborough, it is mostly found around the Wairau Lagoons where large areas of its greyish to pink stems are an iconic feature of the landscape. The tenderer new growth is edible, with a distinctly salty taste. For culinary use, it is also known as samphire, based on the common name for a related species found in Europe.
This example was observed near the Waverley wreck beside the Wairau Lagoons walkway.
