Mountain Caps Orchid (Caladenia lyallii)

Mountain Caps Orchid (Caladenia lyallii) are a native orchid species found in subalpine scrub or beech forest throughout New Zealand. The plant is perennial growing from a tuber with a single, hairy leaf, up to about 20cm long. Between 1-4 flowers are born on a stem about 20cm long. Flowering is from late spring to summer. The species is also known asĀ Stegostyla lyallii.
This example was observed on the Red Hills Track in Mount Richmond Forest Park.
