Kidney fern (Hymenophyllum nephrophyllum)
Last Modified: 27-2-2022 7:44
Hymenophyllum nephrophyllum is a small native fern with distinctive round kidney shaped fronds, found throughout New Zealand in native forests, typically on the forest floor in damp conditions, where it forms expansive mats. Occasionally it will also grow epiphytically on trees where there is sufficient humidity. The fronds shrivel in dry conditions, however open again when exposed to water.
The example illustrated was observed on Archer's Track in Tennyson Inlet
