Blechnum penna-marina (Little hard fern) is a small fern native to New Zealand that forms a ground cover most commonly in montane habitats. It is common throughout New Zealand, and also occurs naturally in Australia and South America. B. penna-marina is also popular as a cultivated garden plant for use as a ground cover and is available from many nurseries. It is able to tolerate both shade and full sunlight, but needs a reasonable amount of moisture to survive. Fronds are about 10-20cm long.
This example was observed growing under mountain beech forest in Lees Creek in the upper Wairau.
