Black Shield Fern/Pikopiko (Polystichum neozelandicum) is endemic to New Zealand, and found throughout New Zealand in a variety of habitats, although is generally more common in well lit locations. There is some evidence that it may hybridise with several other Polystichum species. P. neozelandicum can be distinguished from other similar species by the blackish brown scales which differ in size and shape to other species.
