Bovista are a common genus of small puffball fungi found growing on soil. They are widely distributed throughout New Zealand. The immature fruiting bodies are white, however they become brown on maturity. Size can range from about 20-30mm. Bovista tend to be associated with grasslands, and can be commonly found growing in lawns and pastures. Although theoretically edible, Bovista lack flavour, and are not normally eaten.
This example was observed in the Wither Hills Farm Park.
