Hutton's Shearwater Puffinus huttoni

Growing to around 36 cm long and weighing up to 350 grams Hutton's shearwater can be seen around the coasts of South Island and Lower North Island. It appears very similar to the fluttering shearwater but is slightly bigger. The back and wings are dark brown with much lighter under parts except near the base of the wings where there are dark brown markings. There is a total population of around 160 000 pairs which nest in the Seaward Kaikoura Range between 1200 and 1600 metres above sea level. Eggs are laid in late spring in small burrows and birds fledge in Autumn. Their diet is largely composed of small fish and other sea animals.
