Wairau Valley township is the westernmost settlement in the Wairau Valley located on State Highway 63 about 26km west of Renwick. While exact census data is not available, the nearest data block would suggest a population of around 300 for the township and immediately surrounding area. Altitude is approximately 160m above sea level.

The township has a pub, a church, a primary school, numerous lifestyle blocks, and a naturist park. Several other small businesses are located in and around the township. There is also a golf course.

Due to altitude and distance from the sea, Wairau Valley tends not to be affected by the cooling effect of a sea breeze, however in winter can suffer heavy frosts and on very rare occasions snowfall.
