In Marlborough itself, there are many well stocked rivers and streams with abundant brown trout, and although not strictly within Marlborough, the Nelson Lakes are within easy reach for a day's angling. The Wairau is probably the most important river in the region for trout fishing, and it can also provide some opportunities for salmon. The Pelorus and Rai rivers provide some rainbow trout in addition to brown trout and limited numbers of Salmon. If you intend to go freshwater fishing, you need to purchase a licence for the season, which you can obtain from an outdoor sports shop.
